Haiku for Contemplation

- based on Jewish survival stories.

Ms. Kristine Keren escaped from the Lwow ghetto in Poland with her father. She spent fourteen months hiding in the sewers beneath that city avoiding the Germans.

Shining eyes
A rat recoils
Kristine keeps me calm.

Shooting hoops
Dad wins
We do not run for our lives.

Green box
Smell engulfs
Would I endure a year?
Ms. Esther Bem navigated high altitude mountains to find refuge among a village population. She remembers the courageous people who offered help to victims despite the difficult conditions.

A mountain trail
Esther climbs blindly
Courage sings.

Hearts open
Compassion beats steady
Consequences damned.

Air thin
Skis silent
My path down, Esther’s up.
